The Easiest — and Tastiest — Unagi-don You’ll Ever Make at Home

Only got 20 minutes to make lunch? Or maybe you just don’t feel like exerting much effort in the kitchen today? Well, here’s a low effort dish that’ll satisfy your craving for something sweet and savory.

Unagi-don is broiled eel glazed with a sweet-savory Japanese sauce (usually called Tare) and served on top of steamed white rice. But with this little hack, you don’t have to go through all the trouble of grilling and broiling and glazing the unagi.

Highly recommending you get the Frozen Broiled Unagi (₱600 for 250g) from Cold Storage Seafood in San Juan City. It comes pre-seasoned and pre-broiled, so all you have to do is pop it in the oven, oven toaster, or air fryer for 15-20 minutes (depending on how hot your oven is) to reheat it. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t burn.

Once warmed, you can slice the unagi to your preferred size and serve it on top of some steamed rice sprinkled with furikake. A little bit of togarashi or pepper flakes also does wonders to this quick and easy meal. You can even serve it with additional sauce on the side, so the rice will also soak up all that flavor. Yum!

And you know what, a soft-boiled egg (or onsen egg) would work so well with this by adding a creamy component. Enjoy!
